Driving in Georgia: rules for tourists

Speed limits, cameras, alcohol and mountain roads — how to drive in Georgia without fines or surprises.

Driving in Georgia is not hard: traffic keeps right and the signs are familiar. A few things are worth knowing in advance.

Speed and cameras

  • Follow the signs: usually 60 km/h in towns, more outside towns, up to 110 km/h on fast highway sections.
  • Tbilisi and the highways have many cameras. Fines go to the car owner, and under the rental contract the renter pays them.
  • Our cars have GPS: going above 130 km/h carries a separate fine under the contract, even if the police did not stop you.

Alcohol

The legal alcohol limit for drivers is very low. Don't drive even after one glass of wine — and insurance does not cover accidents while drunk.

Mountain roads

  • On serpentines keep to your lane and don't overtake before bends.
  • Cows and other animals may be on the road, especially in villages and the mountains.
  • In winter the mountains have snow and ice — read our winter roads tips.
