Kakheti in a day: Sighnaghi and the wine roads
About two hours from Tbilisi: hilltop Sighnaghi, Bodbe Monastery and the wineries of the Alazani Valley.
Kakheti is Georgia's main wine region, and it is easy to tour by car in a single day.
Route
- Tbilisi to Sighnaghi: about 110 km, roughly 2 hours via Sagarejo. Sighnaghi is a small hilltop town with fortress walls and views over the Alazani Valley.
- Bodbe Monastery — a couple of kilometres from Sighnaghi.
- Telavi and Tsinandali — come back via Telavi over the Gombori Pass and stop at the Tsinandali estate.
Wineries and tastings
Kakheti has dozens of wineries with tastings. If you want to taste, agree who drives: the legal alcohol limit for drivers is very low, and insurance does not cover accidents while drunk.
Which car
The roads are mostly paved, so any car will do. For a group or a family with luggage, a crossover or a bigger car is more comfortable.
